The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that the former president be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.
